[It is well for us Venerable Sir, exalted one, that having attained Nibbana]

Pacchimā ja-natā nu-kam pamā-nasā

[(You still) had compassion for later generations.]

the embodiment of wisdom and virtuous conduct

Sugato

who has proceeded by the Good Path (to Nibanna).

Lokavidū

One who sees through the veils of the temporal worlds,

Incomparable trainer of men,

Purisa-dhamma-sārathi satthā deva-manus-sānaṁ

Supreme spiritual teacher of devas and men,

He is the Awakened One, skilled in elucidating the Dhamma.

Buddha became an Arahant while attaining glorious qualities

Suddhā-bhi-ñāna-karunā-hi sam-ā-ga-tatto

such as purity, unsurpassed knowledge and compassion – all seamlessly unified in him.

Bodhesi yo sujanataṁ ka-malaṁ va sūro

He awakens the wise just as a lotus is awakened by the sun.

Vandā-mahaṁ tamaranaṁ sirasā jinendaṁ.

I bow my head in the greatest respect to the Supreme Conqueror.

Buddho yo sabba pānīnaṁ saranaṁ khema-muttamaṁ

Buddha is the ultimate refuge: security from (unwise reaction to) the influxes.

Patha-manussa-ti-thanāṁ vandāmi taṁ sire-na-haṁ

Inviting inspectionto be seen and realized here-and-now,

Leading inward (to the peace within the mind),

Paccataṁ veditabbo viññūhīti

To be known by the wise, each for himself.

Dhammā-Bhigīti

Homage to the Dhamma

[Handa mayaṁ Dhamma-bhigītiṁ karoma se]

[Praise to the Dhamma]

S-vāk-khā-ta tā – di – guna – yoga – va – sena seyyo

[This Dhamma is] Well-taught, many sublime qualities are woven together in

Yo magga pāka-pariyatti vimok-khhabhedo

this Path that leads from study to glorious Liberation.

Dhammo kulo-kapatanā ta-da-thāri-thārī

The Dhamma will protect those who uphold it from falling into evil states.

Vandā-mahaṁ tamaharaṁ vara-dhamma-mettaṁ.

I revere the Dhamma, it is the Destroyer of Darkness.

The Dhamma is the ultimate refuge: security from (unwise reaction to) the influxes.

The Virtues of the Sangha

Supatipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-sagho

Of good conduct is the community of noble disciples of the Blessed One,

Ujupatipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho

They have practiced diligently in an upright manner.

Ñāyapatipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-sangho

The Buddha’s Sangha has practiced properly

Sāmīcipatipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho

and completed the task

Yadidaṁ cattāri purisa-yugāni attha purisa-puggalā

That is to say: the four pairs of Noble Ones and the eight individuals,

Esa Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho

These disciples of the Exalted One are:

Āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkineyyo añjali-karanīyo

Worthy of giftsworthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect.

Anuttaraṁ puñña-khettaṁ lokassāti

They provide an incomparable field of Merit for the world.

Saṅghā-Bhigīti

Homage to the Sangha

[Handa mayaṁ Saṅghā-bhigītiṁ karoma se]

[Praise to the Sangha]

Saddhammajo su-pati-patti-gunā-di-yutto

Arisen from the Dhamma, the Sangha unifies the attainments they have accrued through superb practice.

Yotthabbidho ariya-puggala-saṅgha-settho

They are the foremost of the Eight Groups of Noble Persons.

Sīlā-di-dhamma-pa-varā-saya-kāya-citto

Guided in body and mind by moral purity and other virtues

Vandāmahaṁ tamariyāna ganaṁ su-suddhaṁ

I revere the Sangha – the purified assembly of Ariyas.

Saṅgho yo sabba pānīnaṁ saranaṁ khema-muttamaṁ

The Sangha is the ultimate refuge: security from (unwise reaction to) the influxes.

Tati-yānussatithānaṁ vandāmi taṁ sirenahaṁ

Reflecting thus (on its virtues), thirdly I bow to the Sangha.

I vow to serve the Sangha, it is the Great Master.

[Handa mayaṁ sarabhanyena Buddhamaṅgalagāthāyo bhanāma se]

Of the two-legged beings, the Buddha is most excellent: he sits in the middle

Kondanna sits before me (east), Kassapa is in the southeast,

Sariputta is in the south, Upali is in the southwest,

Ananda is in the west, Gavampati is in the northwest,

Mogallana is in the north, Rahula is in the northeast.

All these arahants stand here, being blessings of the Buddha.

They are venerated by me, and worshipped with worthy things.

By the power of all these efforts, may all happiness be yours.

Having saluted those who are worthy of veneration

And saluting the Triple Gem may abundant meritorious fruits be received

And by their power, all dangers are diverted

The Conquerors’ Protective Verses

[Ja-yā-sa-nā-ga-tā] Buddhā je-ta-vā mā-raṁ sa-vā-ha-naṁca-tu-sac-cā-sa-bhaṁ ra-saṁ ye pi-viṁ-su na-rā-sa-bhā

Those Buddhas, noble ones, who emerged victorious over Mara and hisarmy, they savored the immortal nectar of the Four Noble Truths.

Tan-haṅ-ka-rā-da-yo Buddhā at-tha-vī-sa-ti-nā-ya-kā sab-be pa-tit-thi-tā may-haṁ mat-tha-ke te mu-nis-sa-rā

May those 28 Buddhas, beginning with Tanhankara, all sovereign sages,be established upon my head and lead me just as they led the world.

Sī-se pa-tit-thi-to may-haṁ Buddho Dhammo da-vi-lo-ca-ne Saṅgho pa-tit-thi-ko mayhaṁ u-re sabba-gu-nā-ka-ro

May the Buddha and the Dhamma be enshrined on my head, and shine in my eyes. Let me cherish the Sangha –the mother lode of all virtues – with my heart.

Ha-da-ye me A-nu-rud-dho Sā-rī-put-to ca dak-khi-ne Kon-dañño pit-thi-bhā-ga-sa-miṁ Mog-gal-lā-no ca vā-ma-ke

Let Anuruddha dwell in my heart, Sariputta on my right, Kondanna guard my back and Moggallana on my left.

Dak-khine sa-va-ne may-haṁ ā-suṁ Ā-nan-da Rā-hu-lo Kas-sa-po ca Ma-hā-nā-mo u-bhā-suṁ vā-ma-so-ta-ke

Likewise, may Ananda & Rahula be at my right ear, Kassapa and Mahanama at the left ear.

Ke-sa-to pit-thi-bhāg-as-miṁ su-ri-yo va pa-bhaṅ-ka-ro Ni-sin-no si-ri-sam-panno So-bhi-to mu-ni-puṅ-ga-vo

May Sobhita, the noble sage, sitting in consummate glory, blaze like the sun all over the hair on my back.

Ku-mā-ra kas-sa-po the-ro ma-he-sī cit-ta-vā-da-ko So may-haṁ va-da-ne nic-caṁ pa-tit-thā-si gu-nā-ka-ro

Let the Elder Kumara Kassapa, the prince of brilliant speakers, a gold mine of virtue, always guard my mouth.

Punno Aṅ-gu-li-mā-lo ca U-pā-lī Nan-da Sī-va-lī The-rā pañ-ca i-me jā-tā na-lā-te ti-la-kā ma-ma

May these five elders – Punna, Angulimala, Upali, Nanda & Sivali – dwell like an auspicious ’tilaka’ mark in the middle of my forehead

Se-sā-sī-ti ti ma-hā-therā vi-ji-tā ji-na-sā-va-kā E-te-sī-ti ma-hā-therā ji-ta-van-to ji-no-ra-sā Ja-lan-tā sī-la-te-je-na aṅ-ga-maṁ-ge-su san-thi-tā

May the rest of the 80 great elders – victorious ones who have defeated all the defilements and prospered through their observance of morality dwell within me in the various parts of my body.

Ra-ta-naṁ pu-ra-to ā-si dak-khine met-ta sut-ta-kaṁ Dha-jag-gaṁ pac-cha-to ā-si vā-me Aṅ-gu-li-mā-la-kaṁ

May the Ratana Sutta precede me, the Metta Sutta be to the right, the Dhajagga Sutta following, with the Angulimala Paritta to the left.

Khan-dha-mo-ra-pa-rit-tañ-ca ā-tā-nā-ti-ya-sut-ta-kaṁ Ā-kā-se cha-da-naṁ ā-si se-sā pā-kā-ra-san-thi-tā

Let the Khandha & Mora Parittas and Atanatiya Sutta form a canopy to protect my head and shelter me just as these surrounding walls do.

Ji-nā-nā-vara-saṁ-yuttā sattap-pā-kā-ra-lan-ka-tā Vā-ta-pit-tā-di-sañ-jā-tā bā-hi-raj-jhat-tu-pad-da-vā

May all the suttas be established and fortified as though a seven-walled fortress to protect me from all external and internal perils,including natural causes of poor health. May this protection be so great as to completely eradicate all dangers.

A-se-sā vi-na-yaṁ yan-tu a-nan-ta-ji-na-te-ja-sā Va-sa-to me sa-kic-ce-na sa-dā sam-buddha-pañ-ja-re

Let all remaining ills be banished by the power of my observing the moral discipline of the Victorious One whose virtues are innumerable.

Ji-na-pañ-ja-ra-maj-jham-hi vi-ha-ran-taṁ ma-hī-ta-le Sa-dā pā-len-tu maṁ sabbe te mahā-pu-ri-sā sab-hā

May all those Buddhas who are arrayed about The Conqueror protect and guard me.

Ic-ce-va-man-to su-gut-to su-rak-ko Ji-nā-nu-bhā-ve-na jit-u-pad-da-vo Dhammā-nu-bhā-vena jit-ā-ri-saṅgo Saṅghā-nu-bhā-vena jit-an-ta-rā-ya Sa-dhammā-nu-bhā-va-pā-li-to ca-rā-mi jina-pañ-ja-re-ti

Thus I am superbly well sheltered, well protected. Through the power of the Victor misfortunes are vanquished. Through the power of the Dhamma the enemy horde is vanquished. Through the power of the Sangha dangers are vanquished. Guarded, protected and guided by the true Dhamma, may I prosper by following the Path of the Victor.

Sāmīcipatipanno Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho

and completed the task.

Yadidaṁ cattāri purisa-yugāni attha purisa-puggalā

That is to say: the four pairs of Noble Ones and the eight individuals

Esa Bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho

These disciples of the Exalted One are:

Āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkineyyo añjali-karanīyo

Worthy of giftsworthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect.

Anuttaraṁ puñña-khettaṁ lokassāti

They provide an incomparable field of Merit for the world.

The Stanzas of Victory

[Bāhuṁ sahas-sa-ma-bhi – ni-mitta sāvudantaṁ Grī-me-kha-laṁ u-dita ghora sa-se-na māraṁ

Creating a monstrously huge, illusory form with a thousand arms brandishing deadly weapons, mounted on his ferocious elephant Girīmekhala, leading his gruesome army of fiends, Māra came charging at the Buddha!

Dānā-di dhamma vi-dhinā ji-ta-vā Mu-nindo Tante-jasā bhavatu te jaya-maṅ-ga-lā-ni

Due to his perfection of Generosity, the Lord of Sages expounded the righteous Dhamma thereby subduing the enemy. Through the power of this inspiring triumph, May you also experience glorious victory over Evil.

Mā-rā ti-re ka-ma bhi-yuj-jhita sab-ba-rat-tiṁ Ghor-am pa-nā-la-va-ka mak-khama-ma-kha-tha-yak-khaṁ Khan-tī su-danta vidhinā ji-ta-vā Mu-nindo Tante-jasā bhavatu te jaya-maṅ-ga-lā-ni

An even more fiendish creature than Māra was Ālavaka the terrifying Yakkha who assaulted the Buddha throughout an entire night. Simply by exercising self-control and patience, the Lord of Sages subdued him. Empowered by this inspiring triumph, may such a glorious victory be yours.

Nālāgiriṁ ga-ja-va-raṁ a-ti-mat-ta bhū-taṁ Dā-vag-gi cakka ma-sa-nī-va su-dā-ru-nan-taṁ Met-tam-bu-se-ka vidhinā jitavā Munindo Tante-jasā bhavatu te jaya-maṅgalāni

Nālāgiri was the greatest of all elephants; after being fed intoxicants, his brain was a-fire, and he was raging murderously, electrifying all, attacking everyone in his path with the ferocity of a thunderbolt. His rage was overcome by waves of Loving-Kindness sent by the Lord of Sages. Through the power of this inspiring triumph, may you vanquish all foes.

Ukkhitakhagga matihattha sudārunantaṁ Dhā-van ti-yo ja-na-pa-than-gu-li-mā-la van-taṁ Iddhī-bhi saṅ-kha-ta mano jitavā Munindo, Tantejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni

With his sword raised to strike, the savage Angulimāla pursued the Blessed One for three leagues. He was subdued by the psychic power of the Lord of Sages. Through the power of this inspiring triumph, May you also experience a glorious victory.

Katavāna kattha mu-da-raṁ i-va gab-bhi-nīyā Ciñ-cā-ya dut-tha va-ca-naṁ ja-na-kā-ya maj-jhe San-tena soma-vidhinā jitavā Munindo, Tantejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni

Having tied some wood around her stomach to simulate pregnancy, before a devout Assembly, Ciñcā foully accused Buddha of lewd behavior. She was subdued by the Lord’s peaceful bearing and imperturbable serenity. Through the power of this inspiring triumph, may you also experience a glorious victory.

Saccaṁ vihāya ma-ti-sac-caka vā-da-ke-tuṁ Vā-dā-bhi-ro-pita-ma-naṁ a-ti-an-dha-bhū-taṁ Paññā-pa-dī-pa ja-li-to jitavā Munindo, Tantejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni

While pretending to promote the Truth as he wandered about Engaging in disputations, the ascetic Saccaka blinded himself by his own constant distortions of the Truth. He was conquered when he was exposed to the light of the Lord of Sages’ illuminating Lamp of Wisdom. By the power of this inspiring triumph, may a glorious victory be yours.

Nandopananda bhujagaṁ vibu-dhaṁ ma-hid-diṁ Put-te-na thera bhu-ja-ge-na da-mā-pa-yan-to Id-dhū-pa-de-sa vidhinā jitavā Munindo, Tantejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni

Nandopananda, the gifted but twisted King of the Nagas was using his great psychic powers in an antagonistic way, so Buddha sent his great elder disciple Moggallana to subdue him through his even greater psychic powers. Then using his own supernormal faculties, the Lord of Sages subdued him. By the power of this inspiring triumph, may a glorious victory be yours.

Duggāhaditthi bhujagena sudattha hattaṁ Brahmaṁ vi-sud-dhi ju-it-mi-dhi ba-kā bhi-dhā-naṁ Ñā-nā-ga-de-na vidhinā jitavā Munindo, Tantejasā bhavatu te jayamaṅgalāni

Though a great radiant, majestic Brahma god, Baka was held in thrall by his pernicious views – twisted tightly around his own mind like a snake coiled around an arm. Buddha cured him of his those views by the medicine of Wisdom. Through the power of this inspiring triumph, may a glorious victory be yours.

Etāpi Buddha jayamaṅgala atthagāthā Yo vācano dinadine sarate ma-tan-dī Hita-vāna ne-ka-vi-vi-dhā-ni cu-pad-da-vā-ni Mok-khaṁ su-khaṁ adhi-ga-mey-ya na-ro sapañño

He who recites and ponders these eight verses energetically every day, can overcome all obstacles and attain the joy of Liberation.

The Victory Protection

[Mahākārunikonā-tho hi-tā-ya sab-ba-pā-ni-naṁ Pū-re-ta-vā pā-ra-mī sab-bā pat-to sambo-dhi-mut-ta-maṁ E-te-na sac-ca-vaj-je-na ho-tu te jaya-maṅgalaṁ

The compassionate Lord, for the welfare of all beings, achieved the Ultimate Perfections and attained the highest Awakening. By this asservation of Truth, may you have the greatest victory.

Ja-yan-to bo-dhi-yā mū-le sak-yā-naṁ nan-di-vad-dha-no E-vaṁ ta-vaṁ vi-ja-yo ho-hi Ja-yas-su jaya-maṅgale A-pa-rā-ji-ta-pal-laṅ-ke sī-se patha-vi-pok-khare Ab-hi-se-ke sab-ba-buddhā-naṁ / ag-ga-pat-to pa-mo-da-ti

His triumph, attained at the foot of the Bodhi Tree delighted the Sakyans. So might victory be yours. May you win the blessing of victory by asserting your undisputed right to sit on the adamantine throne at the center of the worlds – where all Buddhas have claimed their supremacy.As they did, so might you ascend to the summit of joy.

Su-nak-khat-taṁ su-maṅ-ga-laṁ su-pab-bhā-taṁ su-hut-thi-taṁ Su-kha-no su-mu-hut-to ca su-yit-thaṁ brahma-cā-ri-su

A lucky star, an auspicious blessing, a lucky day, an auspicious sacrifice, a lucky instant, a lucky moment -all these coincide at the time of giving righteous donations to those living the holy life.

Pa-dak-khi-naṁ kā-ya-kam-maṁ Vā-cā-kam-maṁ pa-dak-khi-naṁ Pa-dak-khi-naṁ ma-no-kam-maṁ Pa-ni-dhī-te padakkhinā Padakkhināni katavāna Labhantatthe pa-dak-khine

[When] action of the body is righteous, verbal action is righteous, mental action is righteous, and aspirations are righteous, [then] highly beneficial results are sure to be obtained.

Evening Transference of Merit

Uddissanādhitthanāna Gāthā

Dedicating Merit to All Beings and Personal Aspirations

[Handa mayaṁ uddissanādhitthānagāthāyo bhanāma se]

Iminā puññakammena upajjhāyā gunuttarā

By this Meritorious deed [I transfer any Merit that has arisen] to my virtuous preceptor,

Ācariyūpakārā ca mātā pitā ca ñātakā

my teachers who have encouraged me, my father, my mother and my relatives,

Piyā māmaṁ suriyo candimā rājā gunavantā narāpi ca

my elders, the sun, the moon and the King, virtuous people and high-ranking people,

Brahma Mārā ca Indā ca Lokapālā ca devatā

[Heavenly Guardians]: Brahma gods, Mara, Indra and the Worldly Guardians and devas

Yamo mittā manussā ca majjhattā verikāpi ca

Yama the Lord of Death, all humans: friends, the indifferent & enemies.

Sabbe sattā sukhī hontu puññani pakatāni me

May all beings enjoy happiness due to this Meritorious action I performed,

Sukhaṁ ca tividhaṁ dentu khippaṁ pāpetha vo mataṁ

may all beings enjoy intense bliss, and gain release from evil.

Iminā puññakammena Iminā uddisena ca

By performing this Meritorious deed and through this act of sharing

Khippāhaṁ sulabhe ceva tanh-upā-dāna-ched-anaṁ

may I quickly enjoy the blessing of the eradication of craving, clinging and grasping (attachment).

Ye santāne hinā dhammā yāva nibbānato mamaṁ

May all unwholesome things be banished while striving for Deliverance.

Nassantu sabbadā yeva yattha jāto bhave bhave

May all such evils cease [to plague me] through all future lives.

Uju-cittaṁ sati-paññā sallekho viriyam-hinā

May I have an upright mind, mindfulness and wisdom – to work together to uproot all defilements.

Mārā labhantu nokāsaṁ kātuñca viriyesu me

May I be free from Evil through the power of correct action and effort.

Buddhā-dhi-pa-varo nātho Dhammo nātho varuttamo

Through the power of my seeking the Supreme refuge in the Buddha and the Dhamma,

Nātho Paccekabuddho ca Saṅgho nāthottaro mamaṁ

the Paccekabuddha and the Sangha – may this be my great refuge –

Tesottamānubhāvena Marokasaṁ lab-han-tu mā

even through my final birth as a human may the evil ones have no chance.

Sending Loving-Kindness to All Beings

[Sabbe sattā:

Sat tang lai tee ben puan tuuk, Gert, gai, jep, dai duay kann, tang mot tang sin

All beings. To all beings who are our companions in suffering: we are born, age, endure pain, and die together. We dedicate this merit to all our fellow beings who suffer together.

Averā

Jong ben suuk ben suuk ther Ya dai mee wen gae gan la gan leuri

No Anger. Free of enmity. Let all beings be happy. Let the results of bad karma be ameliorated and no longer oppress us.

Abhayā-pajjhā

Jong ben suuk ben suuk ther / yaa dai bee-it bee-an sueng gan la gan leuri

No fear. Let us be harmless and do no harm or injury to one another. May we enjoy continuous happiness. May we all be free from unhappy confrontations & malicious conduct.

Anīghā

Jong ben suuk ben sukk ther Yar dai mee kwarm tuuk gai, tuuk jai leuri

Let all be free from mental and physical suffering. So may we live happily henceforth. Abolish pains of the body and mind.

Sukhī attā-naṁ, pari-ha-ran-tu

Jong mee kwarm suuk gai, suuk jai / rak-saa ton hai pon / jaak tuuk phai tang sin ther / Taan tang lai, tee taan dai tuuk, kaw hai taan mee kwarm suuk taan tang lai, tee taan dai suuk, kaw hai suuk YING YING.

May all beings be able to enjoy and sustain supreme happiness. Let us be happy in body and spirit. Let all beings escape from suffering.

Sabbe sattā

sat tang lai tee gert ben chalabucha, tee gert ben antacha tee gert ben samsedacha, tee gert ben opa-pattica Jong ma rak kuson pon la boon/ hai tuan tua took tua sat ther

All beings. Let all beings – whether born from the womb, from eggs, from the decomposition of matter or spontaneously born – may they all enjoy wholesome states of mind which lead them to the end of suffering.
